In the Grey marks the moment Guy Ritchie returns to theaters with first movie in 2 years, uniting Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal in a stylish, sun-soaked heist thriller packed with action and suspense.
Guy Ritchie’s First Theatrical Movie in 2 Years Premieres May 15

Guy Ritchie doesn’t slow down. While most directors make one film every few years, he always seems to have three things cooking at once. This week, his latest action thriller, In the Grey, opened in theaters across the country — and it’s already getting people talking.
The film brings together Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal for the first time on screen. Both actors have worked with Ritchie before, separately. Together, they play two elite operatives — the kind of people who know how to get in, get the job done, and disappear before anyone notices. Think sharp suits, impossible plans, and very dangerous situations. Very Ritchie.

What’s the movie actually about?
A ruthless despot steals a billion dollars. A covert team is sent to get it back. It’s a simple and effective setup. Cavill plays Sid, a disciplined British agent. Gyllenhaal plays Bronco, his quick-witted American partner. Bronco is both arrogant and brilliant. Eiza González completes the main trio as Rachel, a money-recovery expert who narrates their risky plan from start to finish.
Ritchie filmed most of the movie in Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, and in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. These locations give the film a stunning, sun-drenched look that feels both luxurious and effortless. Every frame shines brightly. That’s very much the style of this director.
“The style is always present. The cast is always stacked. The audience just keeps arriving fashionably late.”
The cast that knows each other well
All three of the film’s leads have worked with Ritchie before, which matters more than you might think. Cavill appeared in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. back in 2015 and again in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare in 2024. Gyllenhaal starred in Ritchie’s Afghan war film The Covenant in 2023. González appeared in both The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Ritchie’s Apple TV+ adventure Fountain of Youth.
That familiarity shows on screen. The three leads seem comfortable together. There is no awkward settling in. They just click, and that gives the film a loose, confident energy that carries it through even its slower moments.
| Actor | Role | Description |

Two years on the shelf
Here is something most people don’t know: this film was actually finished back in late 2023. Filming wrapped in Tenerife after the production received a special clearance to shoot during the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes. Then came the delays.
It was originally scheduled for early 2025 through Lionsgate. But post-production took longer than expected, and Lionsgate eventually gave up the distribution rights. Black Bear Pictures stepped in and rescheduled the release for May 2026. That is a wait of over two years from cameras wrapping to opening weekend. Nobody knows exactly why it sat so long, but it is finally here and it still looks sharp.
What to expect from In the Grey
- Fast, flashy action with motorcycle chases, explosive climaxes, and elaborate heist planning sequences
- Gorgeous locations. Tenerife and Jeddah look stunning projected on a big screen
- Sharp banter and male-bonding humor. Very classic Ritchie territory, done well
- Heavy voiceover narration. Rachel guides you through the plan as it unfolds in real time
- Exceptional style. The clothes, the watches, the locations. All of it is immaculate.
What Are the Critics Saying?
The reviews are mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, In the Grey currently sits at 55%, the lowest score that Guy Ritchie and Henry Cavill have earned together since they started working as a team back in 2015.
Critics say the film is entertaining but a little hollow. The surfaces look gorgeous, but there is not much going on underneath the hood. You will not be thinking about these characters a week later.
Roger Ebert’s site gave it a positive review, praising Cavill’s compact, purposeful physicality and Jake Gyllenhaal’s wiry, street-smart energy. Variety was less impressed, noting that Ritchie’s heist films tend to put style ahead of substance, and this one is no exception.
The good news? Audience reception looks much stronger. People who have seen it seem to enjoy it for exactly what it is: a fun, loud, and very good-looking action film. No more, no less.
Ritchie’s Ongoing Box Office Struggle
Here is something worth knowing about this director: his films have a habit of flopping at the box office and then finding massive audiences on streaming.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. made just $107 million on a reported $75 million budget, not the franchise starter Warner Bros. was hoping for. Then came The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which earned less than $30 million against a $60 million budget before quietly becoming a streaming hit.
Both films now have devoted followings. Both found their audiences, just not when it mattered most for the box office.
The opening weekend projection for In the Grey sits somewhere between $3 million and $7 million domestically. That is a modest number for a film this well-cast. The challenge, as always, is not getting people to like it. It is getting people to see it while it is still playing.
What Comes Next for Guy Ritchie?
The man genuinely does not stop working. Even as In the Grey opens this week, he already has two more theatrical films in the pipeline.
Wife & Dog is a dark comedy starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins, due October 23, 2026. After that comes Viva La Madness, a crime drama that reunites Ritchie with his longtime collaborator Jason Statham, currently filming now.
On the streaming side, The Gentlemen Season 2 is already finished and waiting for a Netflix release date. Young Sherlock just earned a Season 2 renewal on Prime Video.
The man is running at full speed across both theaters and streaming at the same time. For someone with such a mixed commercial record, he keeps getting major stars to show up, and he keeps making things that are worth watching.
Should You Go See It?
If you liked The Man from U.N.C.L.E. or The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, this is exactly the kind of movie made for you.
It is slick, fun, and moves at a pace that never lets you get bored. At 98 minutes, it does not overstay its welcome. Cavill and Gyllenhaal work well together, and the action sequences, particularly a motorcycle chase that multiple reviewers have singled out, are genuinely thrilling.
Do not go in expecting something deep or emotionally complex. Do go in expecting something that looks and sounds great on a big screen with the volume turned all the way up. That is the deal, and it is a fair one.
